Head spa and hair loss: what it can and cannot do

Updated 10 October 2026

Many studios mention hair growth, and many people book their first head spa because their hair is thinning. The treatment is pleasant and the scalp is cleaner afterwards. Whether it does anything for hair loss depends on what is causing the hair loss, and that is the part a studio cannot tell you.

What a head spa actually does to the scalp

Three things with a plausible connection to hair: it removes oil, product and dead skin from around the follicles, which keeps the scalp in a healthier state; the massage increases blood flow to the scalp for a while; and the analysis camera shows you your own scalp, which makes people take care of it. Small studies on regular scalp massage have reported modest increases in hair thickness after months of daily massage, but they are small, and a monthly spa session is far less than daily massage.

What it cannot do

Hereditary hair loss, the most common form in men and women, is driven by hormones and genes. No cleanse and no massage changes that. Hair loss after illness, childbirth, stress or iron deficiency mostly resolves on its own once the cause is addressed. Patchy loss, scarring or a sore, inflamed scalp are medical conditions. In all of these cases a head spa may feel good but treats nothing, and time spent on it is time not spent on a diagnosis.

When to see a doctor first

Go to a dermatologist before booking if hair loss started suddenly, comes in patches, is accompanied by itching, pain, redness or scaling, or if you are losing noticeably more hair than a few months ago. Treatments that are proven for hereditary hair loss exist and work better the earlier they start. A head spa can sit alongside them, not replace them.

Using a head spa sensibly

Treat it as scalp hygiene and relaxation, and expect that. Book the basic session, not the longest ritual, and go every four to six weeks if you like it. Tell the studio about any products or medication you use on the scalp so they can avoid interfering with them. Be wary of studios that promise regrowth or sell expensive product series on the strength of a scalp camera image; the image shows oil and flakes, not the future of your hair.

Questions

Can a head spa make hair grow back?

No. It can keep the scalp clean and improve blood flow for a while, which is good for the hair you have. Regrowth needs a diagnosis and, for hereditary loss, proven medical treatment.

Does a head spa make hair loss worse?

Not in a healthy scalp. The hairs that come out during the wash and massage were ready to fall anyway. If your scalp is inflamed or sore, do not book until a doctor has seen it.

How often should I go if my hair is thinning?

If you enjoy it, every four to six weeks as part of scalp care. More often adds nothing, and it never replaces a visit to a dermatologist.
